Letter from the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

It is hard to believe that I am in my last quarter at UC San Diego. When I look back over my six years here, they are replete with wonderful memories, surprising turning points, and only a few regrets. For this last newsletter article, I’m going to look at my UC San Diego experience through the rearview mirror and focus on just a few highlights. Thanks for partnering with me along the way and helping make my experience here remarkable.

In my first weeks of work, in addition to a whirlwind office-by-office listening tour, the whole staff was invited to meet me, and I shared my three main priorities: Enhancing the sense of community, Advancing student health, safety, and well-being, and Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. Throughout my tenure here I have continued to emphasize these elements of an enriching student experience. It is impossible to write “done” next to any one of them, for they are aspirational and can always be improved. Yet I’m proud of the progress you have all made in these key priorities, and I’ll call out a few of the noteworthy milestones.

Staff Kudos

Congratulations to Ann Klein in the Financial Aid Office for receiving the Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action and Diversity Award and to the The Village Residence Life team for their award at the same ceremony in February.

Vincent Tinto, one of the foremost national scholars on higher education retention, in his 1993 book, “Leaving College: Rethinking the Causes and Cures of Attrition” chose the OASIS Summer Bridge Program as the exemplary model. Kudos to all the OASIS staff on this outstanding recognition! In his description of the program, he emphasizes that OASIS selects students for Summer Bridge who often have the greatest need for academic and sociocultural support (due more to institutional weaknesses rather than student deficits). Considering that summer bridge programs are implemented all over the U.S. at many types of colleges and universities, we are very proud that a scholar such as Tinto selected the OASIS program as the model strategy to include in his book! There is no doubt that scholars and practitioners of higher education will read about OASIS in the years to come.

Belinda Zamacona
Belinda Zamacona

Congratulations to Belinda Zamacona in the VCSA Office for being selected for the 2013 César Chávez Staff Award. The award is given to one alumni, staff, and community member each who exemplifies the principals of César Chávez's work for equality and social justice.

Kudos to the Equity-Minded Education Training team that received the Award for Excellence in Institutional Change from the Commission for Administrative Leadership, part of the American College Personnel Association. Join us in congratulating Malik Ismail, Tony Jakubisin, Sonia Rosado, and the other dedicated Residence Life staff who made this an award-winning program.

Big Bang Art Power

Congratulations to Kate Walker, Marty Wollesen, and Amy Thomas on receiving a silver award for the Big Bang ArtPower! fundraising program from the western region of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). ArtPower! at UC San Diego received the CASE 2013 Award of Excellence for it Stewardship Program.

Kudos UC San Diego students and staff and to the Center for Student Involvement! UC San Diego was named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Alternative Breaks, Global TIES, and TMC Public Service Minor were highlighted projects. A special kudos to Dan Perez, Graduate Assistant, who helped compile the application and report.

Congratulations to Recreation and Outback Adventures who hosted the Western Regional Outdoor Leadership Conference (WROLC) from February 1-3 on campus. WROLC 2013 brought together 240 students and student affairs professionals from 25 universities across the west for three days of workshops, a keynote speaker, social events and, new this year, outdoor recreation.

Special thanks to Counseling and Psychological Services who teamed up with Psi Chi, Active Minds at UCSD, UCSD Psychiatry and the CAPS Wellness Peer Educators to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention during the Out of the Darkness Walk.

Students on Stage

Student Affairs would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Southwest Airlines and the generous contributions of community partner, Lidia Martinez. For the past four years Southwest Airlines has graciously donated airline tickets for the UC San Diego Overnight Programs and the Bouchet Graduate Honor Society. This year 40 tickets were given to admitted UC San Diego freshman students from Northern California to attend the Overnight Program and Triton Day! The Overnight Programs have a high yield rate that help UC San Diego build a more divers and inclusive campus. Our deep thanks go to Southwest Airlines – Title Sponsor of the UC San Diego Overnight Programs.

Student-Parent Workshops

UCSD student-parent workshop

Supported by the Parent and Family Programs Innovation and Engagement Fund, financial aid counselors Laura McElroy and Jen Blodgett developed a unique interactive workshop for student-parents. The focus of the workshop was to provide students who are also parents with financial information and tools to develop a budget and learn how to balance income and expenses. Additionally, key financial aid information was provided to support student-parents whose expenses may include childcare and other living expenses for their children. Learning outcomes on financial literacy were established and an assessment for the program was completed. As UC San Diego demonstrates it is a family friendly community, workshops such as these provide an opportunity for student-parents to network and learn key financial skills! What innovative projects are you working on? Please let us know?
