Letter from the Vice Chancellor Student Affairs

Happy New Year! Now, I know it is not January, but as a lifelong educator, the new year begins now for me. I love the energy that both new and returning students bring, and I love the buzz on campus. Like you, I bemoan the increased traffic, but I simply love the vitality. At a recent staff meeting, we discussed all the exciting events and activities in the coming weeks, but we also reflected upon all that we accomplished over the summer, and I'll highlight a few of those here.

We welcomed Chancellor Khosla to UC San Diego. What a dynamic new leader we have! Chancellor Khosla is a gifted public speaker who really connects with his audiences. I have heard him say in multiple settings that one of his top priorities is the quality of student life and the student experience. He'll have many opportunities to meet and get to know students in the coming weeks, and he'll keynote the Student Affairs All-Staff Meeting on November 20, where you will get to meet him if you have not already.

Congratulations to the staff in the Registrar's Office for bringing electronic grading (e-Grades) to the campus. Partnering with staff at ACT, SATS, and several campus department staff and faculty, the members of the eGrades team successfully implemented the new electronic grading system for the UC San Diego campus for spring 2012. Collecting over 86,000 grades for over 25,000 students from over 1,300 instructors of over 4,800 courses, the grade reporting process was completed seven days faster than with the old scanned grade sheets and with ZERO errors! Now, that's something to crow about!

Kudos to ArtPower! Artistic Director Martin Wollesen who was amongst twenty speakers chosen to present at TEDx America's Finest City at the La Jolla Playhouse.
